Memory and knowledge management for AI agents

Memory systems, knowledge graphs and RAG tools give AI agents a memory – so they know customers, cases and company knowledge beyond a single conversation.

Language models forget what they just worked on after every call. Memory tools store relevant information durably and provide it again at the right moment – as short-term memory within a task or as long-term memory across many sessions.

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is closely related: before answering, the agent searches documents or databases and relies on what it finds. Knowledge graphs additionally represent relationships between people, companies and events.

Role in an AI-first business model

Securing and growing revenue requires knowing your customer relationships: past orders, open topics, contacts and signals of new demand. Memory and knowledge management make this knowledge usable for agents.

This turns knowledge management into a governance question. What an agent may remember, for how long and who can correct it belongs in the operating model – not just in the technical implementation.

What to look for when choosing

  • Separation of short-term and long-term memory
  • Ability to correct and delete stored information
  • Traceable origin of every piece of information
  • Access rights per agent, role and customer

13 tools in this category

Private GPT

Lets you work with your own documents through a language model without data leaving your environment. Suited to RAG over confidential material.

Local GPT

A project inspired by Private GPT for querying your own documents locally, using a different language model (Vicuna-7B) and different embeddings (InstructorEmbeddings).

Second Brain AI Agent

A Streamlit app for holding a conversation with your own notes. It uses OpenAI together with the locally run ChromaDB vector database.

SAGE

A locally run institutional memory for AI agents: each memory is only committed after passing BFT consensus. It provides validators and MCP tools for this.

Hindsight

Long-term memory for AI agents from Vectorize. Intended for agents that need to remember information beyond individual sessions.

piia-engram

Persistent memory for AI agents that works across different tools. A local-first identity and knowledge layer for MCP-compatible clients.

Caura

Open-source shared memory for fleets of AI agents, with governance built in. It offers cross-agent recall, permissions, audit trails and persistent storage.

Statewave

An open-source memory runtime that turns events into structured memories. Memories can evolve, be consolidated and be superseded, helping manage long-term context across agent workflows.

CodeAlmanac

A self-updating in-repo wiki for AI coding agents. It records a project's conversations, decisions and context locally inside the repository.

IWE

A Markdown-based knowledge graph for people and their AI agents. Through an editor LSP, a CLI and an MCP server, agents can search, retrieve and restructure plain-text notes.

OpenViking

A context database for AI agents that brings agent memory, knowledge RAG and skills together behind a single interface. It also includes a portable package format for agent plugins.

pond

Stores AI agent sessions losslessly and makes them searchable, regardless of which agent client they came from.

Busabase

A local-first database and workspace for AI agents that keeps structured data, knowledge, documents, files, skills and apps searchable in one place. Agents connect via MCP, OpenAPI or CLI, and changes can be reviewed before they are adopted.

From tool to outcome

In AI-first coaching you clarify which outcomes AI agents should be accountable for in your go-to-market and within which framework. REVAGO then designs, builds and runs your system. You pay for results – not for activity.
